Our Story
Guides first. Company
second.
--- How we started
From porter to principal guide, then owner
Tour Base Safari began in 2011 when a small group of Kilimanjaro mountain guides and Serengeti drivers — friends who had trained each other on the mountain and in the bush — decided to stop leading trips for foreign-owned agencies and start one of their own.
Today the company is still Tanzanian-owned and Arusha-based, with the same commitment: our crews are paid properly, our vehicles are maintained on a strict schedule, and our itineraries are built around what actually works on the mountain and in the parks — not what looks good on a price list
--- How we started
Make world-class Tanzanian adventure travel that Tanzanians themselves lead, profit from, and are proud to put their name on.
Fair pay, always
Porters and crew are paid above the KPAP-recommended minimum on every Kilimanjaro trip, with weight limits enforced.
No resold itineraries
We don’t subcontract your trip to another operator. The company you book is the company on the ground.
Conservation-aware routing
Vehicle numbers and off-track driving are limited in sensitive habitats, park rules aside.
Honest acclimatization
We’d rather recommend a longer route than sell you a short one with a lower success rate.
--- What makes us different ---
Compared to booking a marketplace listing
Direct crew relationships
You’ll meet the same head guide from your first email to your final night in camp — not a rotating cast.
Transparent inclusions
Park fees, rescue fees, crew wages and gear are itemized on request — no surprise add-ons at checkout
Real group caps
“Small group” means 6 travelers maximum on shared departures, enforced, not a marketing line.
